The Mont St-Louis Building was founded in 1888 by the "Brothers of Christian Schools" association. It was built during a one year period from 1887 to 1888 by architect Jean-Zephirin Rester (Imtl.org). The Brothers of the Christian School Association arrived in Montreal in 1837 and were responsible for creating many schools. While building new schools, they also published hundreds of textbooks. This association was founded by Saint John de Baptist de La Salle (1651-1719).
Saint John Baptist De La Salle:
John Baptist De La Salle was born in France in 1651. He had a dream of educating and giving knowledge to others. Due to his hard work there are "La Salle" schools in over 80 countries around the world. He created these schools after being involved with a gang of rough, poverty stricken young boys. He dreamed of educating them so that they could live better lives. By creating schools he was able to make his dreams come true and he was able to educate thousands of young men (saintjohnbaptistdelasalle.com).

When looking at photographs of apartments available for rent on line, one can see that the building is very beautiful architecturally and that it is advertised to attract a higher class of people.
